The guys over at Evolution and Us were kind enough to send over a free copy of ImagineThat magazine. Sadly my copy suffered a little at the hands of the Royal Mail, gaining a few knocks on the way here but the booklets intention is still very clear. Imagine That is primarily aimed at the student and recent graduate market, showing young creatives work and giving tips on how to avoid distractions when working on a new project.

Over all the booklet feels pretty solid, consistency of presentation, selection of work etc is successful. To my mind the type is a little heavy handed which clearly suits some of the featured designers work a little better than others, but you really can’t complain to much. All power to people who create something off their own backs with a positive attitude and direction, whilst there’s certainly room for the magazine to grow, the first edition has definitely started out in the right direction.

Also included with the magazine was this very cheery little poster which my wife is a big fan of.

Here’s a little sneak peak of a new project started last week. I’m working with Illustrator, Textile designer and Set designer Olivia Darlington to create a fully formed identity package. The scope of the work is very extensive and due to the varied nature of Olivia’s work allows for a wide scope of visual material. I’ve known Olivia for almost a decade and the sheer variety of work produced makes it a joy to photograph and work with.

And here’s a sneak peak at the letter work for the logo, classic forms with a slightly modern twist.

Unit Editions, one of my favourite design publishers, is currently having a 50% sale to clear stock for next years projects. I took this as an opportunity to purchases a copy of the Wim Crouwel Catalogue produced for his retrospective at the Design Museum, curated by Spin. This is my second purchase from Unit Editions, the first being the fantastic Super Graphics, which is now only £12.50, an absolute bargain. They put a real care and craft into their books, which really shows in the details, such as the alternative covers, title stickers and delicate handling of photography.

Here’s an update I should have posted a while ago. This year I’ve been lucky enough to have worked on two exhibitions shown at the Lighthouse gallery in the centre of Glasgow. This exhibition celebrates the common wealth games which will come to Glasgow next. My main area of focus for the show was the enormous map (hand re-drawn in 3 days) and information graphics placed on the wall opposite.

My final year at Art School is now complete, all the work has been handed in and hung in the annual degree show exhibition. I only have a few weeks left before loosing my student status and so, as all the work has been completed, I have updated this website with the very last of my student work. What has been added is all 4th year work and the culmination of my degree. I encourage anyone interested in design of all types to visit this years Glasgow School of Art degree show which opens to the general public on the 10th of June. This years Visual Communications show is the largest and most varied the school has ever put on and contains many exciting pieces from rising stars, I promise that we have all worked extremely hard to make the space particularly unique this year as it will be the last show in the current building before it is knocked down.

If you happen to run or work for a studio and are interested in attending the designers evening before the show opens to the public, feel free to get in contact and I will see if there are any spare tickets available.

It’s certainly interesting to see a glasgow based independent audio manufacturer with a distinct emphasis on design.

It was great to chat to their lead product designer about the headphones in store and really find out about what makes the company tick, trying to find the perfect price point to sound and design ratio. My particular favourite part of the headphone design is the fabric breaded cables that detach from the headphone to reduce the need for repairs and damage to the headphones. I’ll certainly be interested to see what they produce in the future.

As some of you may well know, I am a huge fan of New York, there is an atmosphere about New York that doesn’t quite exist anywhere else. I’m also a fan of London, but the atmosphere there is infused with the British melancholy that just doesn’t quite give the “anything’s possible” feeling being in New York does. I believe a large part of this is because New York is American and so inherently more confident and less sceptical of new ideas. One new idea coming originating from there is a new way of sharing digital information, entitled Dead Drops, a series of usb memory sticks have been inserted into walls.

These protruding usb storage devices can then be accessed by anyone who walks by, being able to download and upload files anonymously, an intriguing solution to the ever more worrying problem of online file sharing privacy. To my mind, this concept is a great mix of modern technology and lo-fi ideas and could quite possibly become the new flash mob. If you’d like to find out more visit deaddrops.com and get involved with this fun new idea.
